Website Development
When you want to create a website, the first thing you have to consider is the type of visitors you want to attract. What is the purpose of the website? Do you want to present information or do you want to sell something? The answers to these questions will determine the focus of the website.
You have to make sure your website is usable, which means that it won’t take a long time to load once a visitor clicks on it. If it does not load almost immediately, most visitors will click out of it and go on to search for a different website. Navigation links are essential in a website so that your visitors can go to different pages to find new or more information. This links also have to load quickly.
Site structure consists of having a clean hierarchy to the pages of your site. Each page of information should flow from the previous one. If you do not have a pattern to the way your pages load, then visitors will think you have done a shoddy job of developing the website. The best way to get the best structure is to organize your pages before you start. You can sketch a brief outline of what you want the site to look like on paper and use this as your guide as you create the site. For each page, you should also keep all the information above the fold so that visitors don’t have to scroll down to find the content.
Start by developing a home page, which will be an index to all the other pages on the site. The top of the page navigation should contain the name of your site or company and each page should be linked back to this home page. There should be a menu on each page, either in a side bar or at the top of each page to allow visitors a map to help them navigate through the pages.
The content you provide on the site should be pertinent to your topic or main idea. You can write the content yourself or hire a writer to do it for you. It is important that you check all the content before you upload it to the site to make sure that the spelling is correct and that there are no grammatical errors.
There are several different kinds of software you can use to help you design the site and include graphics. Make sure the colours you choose for the background are not dazzling and do not make the writing difficult to read. Black font on a light coloured background always works best.
